Lorenz Maroldt studied political science in Berlin and graduated in 1989. From 1990 onwards, he worked as a freelance writer for different newspapers, including Tageszeitung (taz), Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (mainly sports) and television (various political magazines). From 1991 to 1994 he was editor in charge of regional policy with NEUE ZEIT and worked later on as a correspondent with a focus on federal politics. Since 1994 he has been with Tagesspiegel, initially as an editor for politics, Die Dritte Seite and Senior Berlin Editor, later as Deputy Editor-in-Chief. In 2004 he took over together with Stephan-Andreas Casdorff the position of editor-in-chief with Tagesspiegel.  In Berlin Lorenz Maroldt is also known for his comments on the radio station, Radioeins, where he can be heard every Tuesday morning as well as for the acclaimed Newsletter “Tagesspiegel Checkpoint”, with which he places topics on the Berlin agenda which are also discussed on a supra-regional level.
